8 Layers!!!
Our Americana finally laid her first egg! And it wasn't nearly as blue or green as we were expecting. In fact, it looked just spotty white.
Until I took a photo with two of the other eggs.
Maybe it's the green scarf I used for the background, but Robin's egg seems to have a little blue in it after all. We've noticed that Salt and Pepper's eggs are lighter than the red birds' eggs. Which, as they get bigger, will help us know who's is who.
We're so excited that all of the birds are laying now.

6 of One, Half Dozen of....
EGGS!!!
I went into the coop, reached into the far box, pulled out three eggs. I reached into the next box, pulled out three eggs. I looked back at my left hand and recounted. Then I let out a yelp that scared all of the birds.
6 layers. 2 to go!

Eggs and more eggs...
So, yesterday I took this photo.
We were floored by the size of Sunflower's first egg. It's the one on the right. The one in the middle is the one Hermoine laid. She's the one that has been laying for a while. The only one until this week. Red laid her first egg two days ago. It's the one on the left. It was what I picture the first egg is for most birds, narrower than what they will normally be.
Sunflower actually got a bath for her trouble. We were out in the yard and noticed her walking strangely. I tried to pick her up, which she didn't like much, and noticed that her bum looked pasty. So hubby and I thought maybe that she had an impacted egg. We had seen to help that we would need to put her in a warm water bath. So we did, and after some poking and prodding we didn't think she had an egg in her. But we still thought something was up because her vent looked irritated. So we started looking around and sure enough, there was her first egg in the middle of the yard.
So far this morning we've had three eggs. Since hens need 25 hours between eggs, we're pretty sure that Sunflower hasn't laid today. It turns out Freckles decided to join the party. At least she knows where the nesting boxes are.

High and Low in One Day
This morning our daughter and I went out to release the chickens from the coop. We opened the door and three came running out. I glanced in to check on the fourth and found her laying in the corner, not moving. Not good.
I went back into the house to trade the kiddo for the hubby and we went back out and found that she was indeed dead. We don't know why. They had all acted fine yesterday and last evening as they headed into the coop. All of them were up on their roost when I closed the door. It was very upsetting.
After lunch I went out to trade the laundry on the line. I saw Hermoine (the one we suspected of being closest to popping out an egg) headed into the coop. I thought, "how sad. She's looking for Cotton (the one that died)." So I went up to check on her and opened the big doors on the coop. There she was digging a nest in the bedding right where we found Cotton. I watched as she did little circles, moved the wood chips piece by piece with her beak, scooched down and got comfy. I was wondering if she was really about to lay an egg right where the other bird died. And as much as I wanted to let her have her first egg laying experience in peace, I thought that was just too creepy.
So I poked and prodded her into the nesting box, where she settled in and lay down. It was all I could do not to open the lid every few seconds.
I finished hanging the clothes, talked to my hubby on the phone, did a little watering for the plants that looked a little limp from the heat. As I was finishing, Hermoine came out of the coop looking kinda chipper. I went to see if she left us a little present. And she did...
We are still very sad about Cotton, but we are very excited about our first egg. What a day this turned out to be.
