We were floored by the size of Sunflower's first egg. It's the one on the right. The one in the middle is the one Hermoine laid. She's the one that has been laying for a while. The only one until this week. Red laid her first egg two days ago. It's the one on the left. It was what I picture the first egg is for most birds, narrower than what they will normally be.
Sunflower actually got a bath for her trouble. We were out in the yard and noticed her walking strangely. I tried to pick her up, which she didn't like much, and noticed that her bum looked pasty. So hubby and I thought maybe that she had an impacted egg. We had seen to help that we would need to put her in a warm water bath. So we did, and after some poking and prodding we didn't think she had an egg in her. But we still thought something was up because her vent looked irritated. So we started looking around and sure enough, there was her first egg in the middle of the yard.
So far this morning we've had three eggs. Since hens need 25 hours between eggs, we're pretty sure that Sunflower hasn't laid today. It turns out Freckles decided to join the party. At least she knows where the nesting boxes are.
